With the increasing calls for the on-shoring of American jobs in manufacturing, Elgin Community College is developing programs and building facilities to train workers for today's smart factory and the broader Industry 4.0 initiative.

Did you know?

Elgin Community College is breaking new ground by constructing a 150,000 sq ft manufacturing and technology center, scheduled for occupancy in 2026. This center will reinforce the college's commitment to manufacturing in the region, provide a rich educational and training experience, and prepare the workforce for the future. ECC's health facility offers practical experience in a controlled environment, allowing students to refine their clinical skills on campus, including highly sought-after skills in mechatronics. Mechatronics combines mechanical elements, electronic components, and computer control to create functional and intelligent systems. Come to ECC to experience the excitement and opportunities this new center will provide and be part of shaping the future of manufacturing and technology.

Can I pursue a degree apprenticeship combo at ECC?

Elgin Community College partners with local businesses to offer apprenticeships, enabling individuals to support their college education and gain valuable work experience financially. If you're interested in a career in CNC Machining, Industrial Maintenance Technology, or HVAC, fill out our form, and our apprenticeship coordinator will contact you to explore possibilities. ECC is affiliated with the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Apprenticeship Training for the supplemental instruction portion of local industry apprenticeship programs. Our Energy Management programs are endorsed by the National Association of Stationary Operating Engineers (NASOE).

What career opportunities are available for individuals with expertise in manufacturing technology?

Manufacturing technology involves using tools, machinery, and processes to transform raw materials into finished products on an industrial scale. When you study at ECC, you’ll have industrial engineering and technology expertise with many different career paths. Look for engineering, production management, quality assurance, industrial automation, welding, and supply chain management roles.

What are ECC’s facilities like?

We offer in-person and hybrid manufacturing programs to accommodate your diverse schedules and learning preferences. Experienced instructors conduct classroom lectures to cover theoretical concepts and oversee in-person labs and workshops to provide hands-on training so you’ll be ready to work in various industries, including manufacturing, automotive systems, aerospace, medical devices, consumer electronics, and more.

IMT Program collaborations help student Steven Spicer excel in new career path

Elgin Community College student Steven Spicer entered ECC’s Industrial Manufacturing Technology (IMT) Program without any knowledge of the craft, coming from a background in construction and working odd jobs to support himself and his two children. After deciding to move onto a new trade, he discovered Computer Numerical Control (CNC), which led him to ECC.
