Are you concerned about the Earth's resource consumption, conservation, and sustainability? Elgin Community College's coursework in energy management will teach you the business of renewable energy and learn from experts through field-based internships and coursework. You'll learn how to evaluate energy management and renewable energy systems in residential and commercial buildings as you study ways to optimize existing and state-of-the-art systems to work as a wind turbine technician. Upon completing the program, you'll have the knowledge and skills to excel in these fields and be well-prepared to pursue certification exams in your chosen specialties.

The curriculum covers various aspects: solar heating, wind energy, solar electricity, and energy auditing. Learn to assess energy management and renewable energy systems in residential and commercial structures. Within the classroom environment, you'll explore techniques for enhancing current building automation systems in homes and commercial spaces and integrating cutting-edge technology. The future employment outlook for energy management is positive, as the demand for energy efficiency and sustainable practices continues to increase in various industries. Roughly 1,900 jobs are projected each year, on average, over the next decade.

What is Energy Management?

Energy management is the process of monitoring, controlling, optimizing, and conserving energy to minimize adverse effects on the environment. It tracks energy consumption to conserve all forms of usage.

The process of energy management includes:

  • Collecting and analyzing continuous data.
  • Identify optimal equipment schedules, control points, and usage rates to improve efficiency.
  • Calculate return on investments.
  • Execute advanced energy solutions.

Energy management is the measure of energy consumption to reduce costs, reduce carbon emissions, and reduce risks.

What will I study for a certificate in Energy Management?


The course of study includes work in solar heating, wind energy, solar electricity, and energy auditing. At ECC, you'll learn to evaluate energy management and renewable energy systems in residential and commercial buildings, including ways to optimize existing commercial and residential building automation systems and new state-of-the-art systems. In addition to classroom study, you'll be in the field performing energy audits and systems analysis on buildings in the Elgin area. Faculty members include veteran teachers and industry professionals.
