As a massage therapist, you can make a real difference in people’s daily lives. You can support mental health, relieve stress, reduce chronic pain, improve sleep, and promote overall healing and recovery through your work. Massage therapy offers a practical and accessible way to help others feel better in their bodies — and your hands can be the key to their well-being.

At Elgin Community College (ECC), our Massage Therapy Program prepares students to take the MBLEx exam necessary for state licensure and begin a rewarding career in health and wellness. ECC’s vocational certificate program offers COMTA-accredited, state-approved, and affordable education, featuring:

  • Experienced instructors and modern lab facilities
  • Flexible full-time and part-time schedules
  • Convenient start dates in both Fall and Spring semesters

Massage Therapy Curriculum

ECC’s 38.5-credit-hour Vocational Certificate in Massage Therapy provides a holistic education integrating body, mind, and spirit. The coursework prepares students for licensure and immediate employment.

Accreditation

ECC’s Massage Therapy Program is accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA), 900 Commonwealth Place, Suite 200-331, Virginia Beach, VA 23464, 202-888-6790. The program also holds school memberships of: American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) Associated Bodyworkers and Massage Professionals (ABMP) Both organizations are members of the Coalition of National Massage Therapy Organizations.

Preference for admission is given to legal residents of District 509. Applicants from other districts may be considered if space is available. Learn more about ECC’s joint agreement programs.

Program length varies by school, but ECC’s program can be completed in as little as three to four semesters, depending on when you start and whether you attend full- or part-time. View our course catalog here.

You’ll need a high school diploma or equivalent, completion of required prerequisites (such as MAS 100 at ECC), and acceptance through the program’s application process.

Yes. The Commission accredits it on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA) and our program holds memberships in both AMTA and ABMP.

Many work in spas, wellness centers, hospitals, chiropractic or physical therapy offices, fitness centers, or start private practices.
