Elgin Community College students Elizabeth Barnes (West Dundee) and Ely Thompson (South Elgin) have been named 2023 Coca-Cola Academic Team Silver Scholars and will receive a $1,250 scholarship. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Academic Team program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver, and 50 Bronze Scholars with nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Each scholar also receives a commemorative medallion.

"I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a recipient of such a distinguished award, and it has provided me with great relief for my continued academic endeavors,” said Thompson. “This scholarship has reaffirmed my beliefs that going above and beyond is always worth it.”

More than 24,000 applications for the Coca-Cola Scholar program were received, and selection is based on the student's All-USA Academic Team competition score. This program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and is administered by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

“I feel honored to have received this scholarship award to further my education as I explore and grow as a college student,” said Barnes. “Phi Theta Kappa has provided me with numerous opportunities that have ultimately set me up for success in life.”
