Overview

Build your future in a field that keeps the world comfortable and energy smart. With ECC's Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) program, you’ll learn to install, service, and maintain the systems that control temperature and air quality—all while helping reduce energy use and environmental impact. You’ll train in modern, hands-on labs equipped with industry-standard tools and real-world systems, such as heat pumps and rooftop units. Guided by instructors with years of professional experience, you’ll gain the practical skills and confidence that employers look for. The EPA requires technicians handling refrigerants to be certified in proper refrigerant handling before buying or working with them. These programs are designed to prepare you for the HVACR requirements, including:

  • Customer-service skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Mechanical skills
  • Time-management skills
  • Troubleshooting skills

Program Highlights

  • Prepare for a career that’s always in demand: In about two years (four semesters), you’ll complete the program and be ready to enter a field where skilled HVAC/R technicians are needed in nearly every industry.
  • Work toward sustainability: You’ll learn how to integrate renewable energy solutions—like solar and geothermal systems—into modern HVAC/R design.
  • Build advanced technical skills: You’ll master system efficiency, automation, and energy management using the latest industry technology.

Discover the Potential of Solar Power for a Sustainable Future

As an HVAC/R student at ECC, you’ll explore how energy management and solar technology are transforming the industry. You’ll learn to integrate renewable systems, boost efficiency, and apply sustainable solutions that reduce environmental impact.

  • Renewable Integration: Utilize solar thermal panels and geothermal heat pumps that harness natural energy to regulate temperature and enhance efficiency.
  • Energy Management: Learn how to reduce energy use and costs through smarter, more sustainable system design.
  • Solar Technology: Gain hands-on experience with solar heating systems that support climate control and lower reliance on traditional energy sources.

By combining HVAC/R skills with renewable energy training, you’ll prepare for a future focused on sustainability and innovation.

As an HVAC technician, you’ll be the expert who keeps indoor environments running smoothly. You’ll work on heating, ventilation, cooling, and refrigeration systems that control temperature and air quality. Your work may include:

  • Installing, cleaning, and maintaining HVACR systems
  • Managing electrical components and wiring
  • Inspecting and testing systems for performance and safety
  • Diagnosing issues and explaining repairs to customers
  • Replacing or repairing defective parts
  • Recommending maintenance to improve efficiency

You’ll solve real problems every day—keeping homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses comfortable year-round.

To become an HVAC technician, you’ll need specialized training and hands-on experience. Employers often prefer applicants who have completed a certificate or associate degree program, like ECC’s HVAC/R program, or an apprenticeship. Some states require licensing, and many technicians undergo background checks before being employed.

At ECC, you’ll get the technical training and practical experience to move directly into the field—or advance into an apprenticeship with local contractors or trade associations.

As part of your HVAC pathway, you’ll be prepared to earn key industry credentials such as the EPA Section 608 Technician Certification. A testing fee applies for this certification.
