Mi Hu

As dean of learning resources and international education, Mi Hu, PhD, supports learning and instruction. What Hu really does is support her colleagues in their efforts to provide valuable resources and services to students, faculty, staff, and community members.

We caught up with Hu to learn more about her work at ECC and the importance she places on creating a purposeful, enriched life. Here is what she had to say.

What is your greatest accomplishment since you've been here?

Though I do not work for the Center for Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL) any longer, I still consider establishing CETL my greatest achievement at ECC. The center presents workshops and professional development opportunities that support the college's strategic initiatives, the instruction and learning process, and the individual goals of faculty members.

What would you do if you were ECC president for a day?

I would have a committee to plan an annual homecoming event. One of the activities would be assigning an alum to each of our students. These alumni would share their experiences on living a meaningful life, their struggles to overcome adversities, their dilemmas in life choices, their achievements, and their visions for their futures. I believe seeing a real-life model of strong will and the indomitable spirit will have an impact on our students because our students are at ECC for training for lifelong learning skills, hewing self-discipline skills, and acquiring the courage to continuously work hard for excellence.

If there was a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?

After I came to the United States, I watched the TV series Happy Days. I like Mrs. C (Marion Cunningham).

What's on your "bucket list?"

To see the world. I would travel with my husband to the corners of the world and learn the different cultures. Life has its limit. However, it will be a joy to carry an enriched soul to the end.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I used to think that I was a good cook with Chinese food. However, it seems that I do not have any new ideas because I do not spend much time cooking. My thumb used to be green. My plants grew well and bloomed beautifully. Now only peonies in my garden are growing well and blooming beautifully in early summer. I appreciate that in responding to the question, I must reflect on my past experiences. I lack "stick-to-itiveness." I have to prioritize my time to the tasks of my daily life.

Where was the best place you've traveled? Or, where would you like to visit?

Traveling to places is always exciting to me. Different cultures and different food are the highlights for me. However, I enjoy nature and gardening. The best of my travel experiences was watching whales on the sea in Alaska and walking in the sunken gardens in Victoria, Canada.

What's one fact we should know about you?

I am the first/only girl in the family for three generations. My grandfather did not have any sisters. My father did not have a sister. I have three brothers.

What would be your "theme song?"

I enjoy humming the song I learned when I was in daycare: "Where does a happy life come from? It is the creation of your own hard work."

What was your favorite class in school?

I enjoyed literature class, especially Homer's Odyssey, when I was in college. The stories are fun to read and fascinating to listen to. However, the hard part is the test: all the names of the gods and goddesses and their stories are all messed together. Then the question came to my pen: Do all of these have anything to do with me or my life?

What was your first job out of school?

I taught five years of high school English after I graduated from college.

What quote best describes your philosophy?

"You will face many defeats in life, but never let yourself be defeated." – Maya Angelou

"We are what we repeatedly do; excellence, then, is not an act but a habit." – Aristotle

Complete this sentence: "I enjoy working at ECC because…"

I enjoy working at ECC because of the college's mission: To improve people's lives through learning. Of course, I like ECC's campus and facilities; they are beautiful and clean. The best return is to see that students leave the college with confidence and the foundation to seek their life goals after numerous struggles and tenacious hard work.
