I left my house, my family, my career and my native country when I moved to the United States from Venezuela. I left during the middle of my college career and started over in a new country with a different education system and where the native language is different than my own.
The challenges I’ve faced have inspired me to do something bigger with my life.
Getting back on my educational path once seemed impossible, but my journey at Elgin Community College started in January 2018 with the English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Now, in December of the same year, I’ll earn my vocational degree, which is proof of my perseverance, hard work, and adaptability, as I excel to achieve my dreams.
My goal is to become a nurse, and I know that with my family’s support and the opportunities that ECC offers, I will achieve it. I used to think “it will be so difficult” but then, I thought “why not?” I wasn’t wrong—it is hard, but it is worth it.
My advice to students is: Don’t be afraid to ask for help, look for opportunities and work hard for what you want. Not everything will be built overnight, but step by step you will build something big…your life. ECC employees want you to succeed, they believe in you. Don’t doubt yourself, go after what you want.
At the beginning of my journey, I was afraid, but now, I know what I’m made of, and I have the confidence to pursue my dreams. This is just the beginning of something big for me.
