“Don’t be afraid. Be focused. Be determined. Be hopeful. Be empowered.” This influential quote by Michelle Obama has become the reality of my journey at Elgin Community College. My college journey began in the spring of 2016 and has carried me through some incredible moments since then.

While attending ECC, I can honestly say this is an institution that ensures every student is given equal opportunity to get involved. For me, that opportunity was Black Student Achievers (BSA). BSA is a student club that empowers African and African-American students to achieve professional and academic excellence while creating a community of understanding, awareness, and civic engagement. Holding a leadership role in a club filled with such brilliant minds, good intentions, and caring hearts has allowed me to realize the impact students can have on the lives of others and the community around us. Nonetheless, being a part of a club has undoubtedly enhanced my college experience, as well as given me something to believe in and stand for.

In addition, I couldn’t have made it through some of my lowest of days without the guidance, advice, shared tears, motivation, and prayers from my mentor, Brittany Barber. We built a strong relationship and I’m beyond blessed by having her play such a major role in my life and time here at ECC. She is the epitome of a great friend. I genuinely appreciate and thank her far more than words could ever explain.

I would also like to thank my family, friends, and the rest of the ECC faculty and staff who helped me along the way. I am truly blessed to be surrounded by people who believe in me and support my goals. I couldn’t be more proud of myself for obtaining my Associate in Science, but the journey doesn’t stop here. Earning my bachelor’s degree in exercise science is the next destination on this amazing journey called life.

Thank you, ECC, for giving me the opportunity to expand my knowledge and for getting me a step closer to becoming a physical therapist. It’s been real.
