On Saturday, April 28, Elgin Community College’s English as a Second Language Program celebrated with an annual tradition. The event honored 89 students who transitioned from one ESL level to the next, or who have completed ESL and transferred into college-level classes. Students’ families, friends and teachers who have been supporting them throughout their studies were invited to attend. Student Silvia Hernandez spoke during the event.
“The ESL transition event gives students the opportunity to share their success at ECC with one another and with their families,” said Marcia Luptak, senior director of ESL. “It inspires everyone to improve their English, further their education and dream big for the future. Students see role models who are like them—which helps them realize that they too can achieve their goals.”
ECC’s Adult Basic and Secondary Education division held its annual High School Equivalency (HSE) graduation ceremony on Friday, May 18 with nearly 50 graduates walking across the stage. Student Galo Yangari delivered the commencement address to a crowd full of supportive family members and friends.
Each semester, the Marketing & Communication department asks graduates to write a short, reflective essay on their journey at ECC. ESL and HSE program graduate Juan Chavez moved to the United States in 2013, only knowing a few words of English. Read how the ESL program helped him find his voice.
