Backpacks, pencils, notebooks, and other school supplies will be given to hundreds of area students in need during the Project Backpack back-to-school supply fair on Saturday, Aug. 11 at Elgin Community College. The event, which is part of a community initiative by ECC and other organizations, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Building J Spartan Events Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.
“It’s incredibly moving to see the impact this event has on so many families in our community,” said Megan Highland, Student Life Coordinator, and the Project Backpack lead. “Thousands of smiling students have left the event wearing their new backpacks full of supplies and excited to start the upcoming school year. Seeing students receive the supplies they need is a wonderful experience, and it’s all made possible by the many generous donors and volunteers.”
Students who provide proof of residency or fall 2018 enrollment in school districts U-46, 300, 301, 303, or 20 or at ECC are eligible to receive backpacks. Recipients are required to bring school registration, a report card, or other proof of school enrollment. If proof of enrollment cannot be provided, then proof of residency for one of the eligible districts must be shown.
Backpacks and supplies are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and there is a limit of one backpack per eligible student. Each backpack may include:
- Two-pocket folders
- One subject spiral notebooks, wide rule
- Filler paper, 150-200 count, wide rule
- Standard yellow wood No. 2 pencils, 10 count
- Black pens
- Glue sticks, 0.21 oz.
- Crayola® crayons, 24 count
Since ECC’s involvement in 2010, more than 12,500 students have been served. Over 1,400 backpacks were distributed to families during last year’s event.
Volunteers are still needed during the event on Saturday, Aug. 11. Individuals interested in volunteering can register online at the Project Backpack website.
