When you are ready to take the exam to become a certified nursing assistant (CNA), your next step is registering for the competency exam.

If you are in search of a CNA education program, please explore ECC’s Basic Nurse Assistant Training Program or call the BNA department at 847-214-7350 or 7310.

Register for the CNA competency exam through SIU

All CNA test registration and exam details are handled by Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale, Illinois. You must register and pay for the exam through SIU’s Nurse Aide Testing site.  If you have questions about the exam, please call SIU at 618-453-4368.

ECC is an SIU-approved testing site

  • Although ECC is an approved testing site, you must register and pay for the exam through SIU’s Nurse Aide Testing site.
  • Registration for each test date closes approximately one month before the test date; you will not be allowed to “drop in” and take the test.
  • SIU will mail your confirmed test time and room assignment before the test date.
  • When you arrive for your exam, you must present a valid photo ID and be listed on SIU’s exam roster.

Health Care Worker Registry

All nursing assistants must be listed on the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Health Care Worker Registry. Nursing assistant students are placed on the registry after meeting the required training and competency testing criteria or equivalency criteria and undergoing a criminal background check. After students take the CNA certification exam, the state will add the exam results (pass/fail) to the registry. For details on this requirement, contact the Illinois Department of Public Health.
