Surgical Technology

With many health care providers moving from in-hospital surgical procedures to outpatient and ambulatory operations and with a surge expected in the growth of our older population in the next few years, surgical technology is expected to grow much faster than the average for all other occupations through the next century, according to the US Department of Labor.

The ECC certificate in surgical technology (SGT) prepares you to become a skilled and valued member of the operating room team. On campus courses in combination with clinical practice at area hospitals equip you to work under the direction of a surgeon and operating room nursing supervisor where your duties as a surgical technologist are likely to include preparing the operating room, handling instruments and supplies during the procedure, and ensuring patient safety.

Note: Criminal background checks and drug testing are required for all health professions programs. Students demonstrating a positive background check or positive drug test will be denied admission to health professions programs. Students demonstrating a positive background check or positive drug test while enrolled in health professions programs will be dismissed from the program.

Competitive Selection Process

If the number of candidates with minimum qualifications exceeds the number of seats available, admission to the program will be competitive and selective. Students who have completed anatomy and physiology will be ranked first according to the grade earned. If the student has completed anatomy and physiology more than once, earned grades will be averaged together for the purpose of ranking only.

Then those students who have only completed BIO 110 or its equivalent will be ranked according to the grade earned. If the student has completed BIO 110 more than once, earned grades will be averaged for the purpose of ranking only.

If there are ties in these steps, the Compass reading assessment score will be used to rank and/or break ties.

Accepted students will be notified by letter before October 1.
