Elgin Community College students can participate in a free, one-week Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Success course beginning May 20 at Aurora University (AU), thanks to a partnership. This is the first year AU has offered the course to ECC students, allowing them to explore STEM careers and success strategies, such as utilizing student clubs, mentoring, networking with alumni, and accessing opportunities, including internships and undergraduate research experiences.

The Strategies of STEM Success course is part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Noyce grant AU acquired in June 2023. ECC, among other colleges, is listed as a grant partner. Classes will take place from May 20 to 24.

“Elgin Community College is excited to partner with Aurora University in providing a direct path for students interested in pursuing a STEM secondary education major,” said Tracy Vittone, director of transfer services at ECC. “We have a long history of creating attainable transfer partnerships between our institutions. This particular transfer partnership and course opportunity will provide ECC students access to resources and scholarship opportunities to help them achieve a career in education.”

Guest speakers from various STEM fields are integrated into their work to help enable students to explore how STEM is intertwined with their professions and career paths.

“I believe this is a great opportunity to learn more about career pathways and what a future in STEM has in store,” said ECC student Isabella Olivarez, who is registered for the course. “While I declared my major in statistics, I am still interested in learning about related fields and careers, especially those that may relate to math or science. I am very excited to learn from experienced personnel and meet other students with similar interests.”

Student participants will receive one credit hour and free books, supplies, and transportation. The deadline for students to apply is Wednesday, May 1. Students can contact Tracy Vittone for more information and how to apply at  tvittone@elgin.edu or 847-214-7548.
