Anastasia “Asia” Toufexis of Elgin has been selected to serve the remainder of the 2009-2010 term as the student member of the ECC's Board of Trustees. A committee of students, faculty, staff and administrators appointed Toufexis—who was seated at the October board meeting.
“I’m happy for the opportunity to serve at this position and plan to do my best,” says Toufexis, who is in college’s paralegal program and serves as president of the Mock Trial Team.
“Asia is a self-motivating, energetic student leader,” says Ronald Kowalczyk, a paralegal instructor and mock trial team advisor who encouraged her to apply for the board position. “She goes to great lengths to help others. I have no doubt that she will make an outstanding student trustee.”
Increased student involvement is Toufexis’ primary goal. She would like the college to implement a spirit week that is comparable to homecoming celebrations held at larger four-year colleges and universities.
“I feel that some people who come to ECC and don’t feel like they’re a part of anything have an opportunity to be a part of something great,” says Toufexis. “Having a spirit week allows more people to become involved at ECC and creates a greater sense of community.”
Toufexis’ term expires in April 2010.
