Career Options!

 Permanent link

So now that I have been exposed to various subjects here at ECC, I have a much better idea of where I want to go when it comes to transferring.

I have been contemplating law school but was not sure what area to specialize in and then I heard of amazing career alternatives with a law degree that do not necessarily involve courtrooms!!

These alternatives include:

-Children's Advocate

- Crime Prevention Coodrinator

-Forensic Investigator

-Assistant to the President/Chancellor

-Director of Federal/State Relations

-Grants and Contracts Manager

-Laboratory Business manager

-Law School Development/Fundraising Officer

-Law School Director of Admissions

-Patent and Copyright Administrator

-Patent Examiner

-Real Estate Auction Project Manager

The List Goes on and on...

Personally I am leaning in going towards Education Administration after law school, but the options with such a degree are vast and not confined to being a judge or attorney.

Summer Plans

So now that finals are technically over, I bet we are all planning epic summers or looking for summer internships or work.

Personally, I plan to start volunteering again! I like to work with kids and summer is the perfect time to do that! They are out of school and in summer camps or activities.

Places to look into include:

-Boys and Girls Club

-YWCA

-YMCA

-ERC (Elgin Recreation Center)

When I was in middle school and high school, I used to volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club (before it was remodeled) and it was so much fun! We would help kids read, supervise craft time, hand out lunches and go on field trips!

Summer is a great time to be involved in the community because our main commitment to school is gone (for most of us anyway).

Hope you all enjoy the summer and whatever plans you have to spend it. :D

Relay Reflections

Hi guys!

Today I was setting up a personal page on the Relay for Life website and I was reflecting on my indirect relationship with cancer.

Please take the time to read my reflection on that page. You don't have to donate, just please read.

Thanks.

Life as a College Student

Hello again everyone!

Another busy week full of planning great events for the semester! Student Government partnered with Phi Theta Kappa during Millenial Week and Chris Doss did an A-W-E-S-O-M-E  job planning the event, and getting people registered to vote while making them more politically aware. Great job.

So since my time-management seemed to be all over the place, I finally made a study schedule! I came up with a list of top 8 places to study around campus, hope it helps:

8. STUDENT LIFE - I know many student leaders and club members live there on a daily basis and it is so great that we have computer access and printers...BUT it is always cold, the WiFi reception isn't that great and there are ALWAYS distractions.

7. JOBE LOUNGE - Great lighting, and comfy seating, BUT it can get noisy, especially around lunch time and during events on campus.

6. CAFETERIA LOUNGE - Scenic views of Spartan Lake, BUT it also gets noisy due to epic video game battles and card duels. Great place to make new friends, not so much to study.

5.  UBC - If you are willing to travel across campus construction, then he UBC has great seating, views, lighting and quiet (aside from occassional construstion-related noise) needed for a comfy study environment.

4.  MSC - The second floor of the MSC has great quiet study areas and are in close proximity to vending machines, ideal for brain food.

3. VPAC - The lounge on the second floor is kinda nice because it is kinda secluded and hidden. It's quiet, comfy and is also close to vending machines.

2. STUDY ROOMS IN BUILDING A - All the construction finally paid off! We now have various study rooms with great lighting and resources. They are equipped with white boards AND tvs that can transmit computer images. These are available to students even if you are not studying for Biology.

1. LIBRARY -  This place has it all! Secluded cubicles, computers, study rooms and a cafe. It's a great study place because all the resources you need are there. From books to tutoring, this place is like a college kid's dream come true!

Well that's all for now, until next week!

(*notice these areas of study were not based on a survey or any other form of questionnaire, just stuff I ranked based on experience lol)

Cheer Up Dude, It's Groundhog Day!

Hello again everyone!

So this week has been so busy for me, my schedule is starting to revolve around school again! But I had a GREAT week.

On Monday night I hung out with great friends and a former ECC employee and it was a great time catching up and joking around. And the food was great!

Tuesday kicked off Black History Month on campus and although I missed the opening ceremony, there are so many events planned for the month.

Wednesday was pretty sweet too! It was my first official Club Council of the semester and it went great! There were so many new clubs there and I saw some new faces. Dustin gave a presentation on sustainability on campus and Nanci is actively working on the multi-cultural event that will be going on on campus in a few weeks! Keep up the great work everyone!

TODAY IS GROUNDHOG DAY!!

He saw his shadow. Six more weeks of winter!

What a stupid holiday in my opinion lol I mean what does the groudhog know? The calendar is already set! Today I read a segment on Yahoo homepage that the National Climatic Data Center did an analysis and found there is no correlation between the groundhog's prediction and the actual weather. Figures. I could have analyzed that! haha.

New Year, New Semester and Other Stuff New

WELCOME BACK EVERYONE!

I hope the first weeks of school have been exciting for everyone and you are all enjoying being back as much as I am!
There are so many things changing around campus! Have you seen the new library and science building?! THEY'RE HUGE! The new science building so modern and fully equipped with supplies and technology in all the classrooms! The only flaw I find is that there is no women's bathroom on one side of the walkway on the second floor, but other than that it's pretty sweet.
The new library has lots of quiet study areas including private study rooms and even a little cafe and lounge on the first floor!

There are also new things going on with Student Government. Our E-Board has changed and I am now the Vice President of Clubs and Organizations, or VPSO. It's pretty cool. There are also new clubs on campus and a few on the way. All the clubs are planning exciting events for the semester.

Next Wednesday is Chili-Rama, so all you chili lovers come out to the Jobe Lounge from 11am-2pm and enjoy some FREE Chili and learn about different clubs on campus and how you can get involved!

IT IS GONNA BE A GREAT SEMESTER!! WOOHOO!

City Happenings

(My ECC Experience) Permanent link

Hello everyone! Hope everyone is enjoying their first few days of a month-long winter break and recovering from the stress of finals.

So I have been anxiously awaiting winter because I love to ice skate and there is an ice rink conveniently located by the Centre of Elgin. Or so I thought!!

WHAT HAPPENED TO IT? IT SHOULD BE UP BY NOW!

But even though there is no rink in Elgin, there is always fun in the city of Chicago that is just a train ride away! There is a big outdoor rink in Millennium Park that is so much and looks amazing at night because it is illuminated with all the surrounding lights. And speaking of lights, Lincoln Park Zoo is all decked out with their holiday display of Zoo Lights, and it's FREE!

If outdoors isn't your cup of tea, then try the just as fun indoor rink in Navy Pier's Winter Wonderless. There are indoor games, rides and attractions there and it is all indoors.
There is so much to do in the winter and I am looking forward to a fun, relaxing and maybe even adventurous winter break!

Hope your break is also enjoyable! (:
