I am so ready for this year!

Inductions :D

(My ECC Experience, Phi Theta Kappa) Permanent link

This past Thursday was our Spring Induction Ceremony! It was such a great time and it was so nice to see all of our new members be inducted into the honor society /WorkArea/threadeddisc/emoticons/happy.png BIG thank you to Ali for being our speaker and Giana for being our singer this semester! Also, we could not have had a great ceremony if it wasn’t for our chairs, committee members and alums. YOU GUYS ARE GREAT! We also had a great dinner after inductions! We all went to Red Robin to celebrate /WorkArea/threadeddisc/emoticons/happy.png

Then, I had this weird feeling. I realized that this was our last ceremony together. But I was happy because we all got to be there; all 8 of us! I immediately felt sad because the entire officer team has become so close! At the same time, I started thinking of all the memories we have all made so far. From all the nicknames we have (Baby Carrots, Dagger, Handy Manny, Gator, Gramps, Chita, G-$, and Cabbage patch), to all of our jokes, and various funny accidents (me face planting a ditch in the middle of a cornfield!).

On the plus side, we still have many great things planned! One thing we cannot stop talking about is Nashville!! Woo hooo!!! O man-we are just so excited to get there, explore around, and celebrate at the gala ceremony. The semester is going by so fast and we will be sure to enjoy every moment to the fullest!

Honor's Lit Class!!! :D

(My ECC Experience) Permanent link

You know how there's always that one class that you just really like? Well, that's how I feel right now about my Honor's Lit class. My instructors are Dennis Lynch and Pat Parks and let me just tell you what a great dynamic duo these two are! The chemistry they have in the class is just phenomenal! I feel like I am getting so much more from this class than I would have ever thought.

This past Saturday, we went to the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre to watch A Midsummer Night's Dream! This was my first time ever watching a play and I'm glad I did! Even though I have never read the book, I found no difficulty in understanding the plot. This Great Books class has allowed me to think more critically and question my thoughts as well as the character's. This was such a fantastic play and I hope to be able to attend another one soon! If you have not seen it, I highly recommend it!

One of my favorite parts of the trip was getting to know some of my classmates. Being on the train, bus, and some walking around really brought us closer. I can honestly say this has been one of the best class trips I have ever been on!

Jinkies! Midterms!

(My ECC Experience, Phi Theta Kappa) Permanent link

O goodness! We are pretty much eight weeks into the semester, which can only mean one thing: Midterms are here! I can only hope that you have all had a great so far and those tests have been treating you well! At this point, I really like that my classes are starting to coincide and complement each other well. It does make my life earlier since I don’t have to review certain material. Even though some material may be easier, you will still leave it for the last minute. What a bad habit!!

In my Experimental Psychology class, we are beginning to prepare for our independent experiments. My group will be doing an experiment that will involve memory and distractions. Tomorrow we will be researching different theories and working on our methodology. I am so excited for this!!!

Also, I can’t believe we only have five more Phi Theta Kappa Meetings left!!!!!! Where has the semester gone?!? Well I am so excited that Inductions are right around the corner because my dear friend Ali will be our speaker this semester! After a successful New Member Orientation, I can say that we will be having a great group of inductees.

What's the best tip you have to prepare for midterms or any midterm-tip in general?

USHLI!!

(My ECC Experience) Permanent link

Hello everyone! Sorry on the late blog :/

Well, as I mentioned in my last blog, I just got back from attending the 30th annual United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) conference in Chicago. I was one of thirty students from around the country to be recognized with the Dr. Juan Andrade Jr. Scholarship for Young Hispanic Leaders :)

I can honestly say this has been one of the best conferences I have ever been to! The different workshops, networking, and the speakers/honorees made this such an amazing experience. What impacted me the most was the session with Ernesto Mejia and the Coolspeak Team. I learned that I’m not just going to school for myself-I’m doing this for my family. So when I feel like giving up, I can’t because others depend on me and I have to set the bar for them to follow my footsteps. Overall, it was great being with all of the scholarship recipients and learning from them. I am glad to have met such an amazing group of students who have already accomplished so much and are great leaders in their communities and I am honored to call them my friends.

I can honestly say that even though this was my first conference, it will certainly not be my last!

On another note, its was nice hanging out with the Phi Theta Kappa crew for our bowling fellowship event (I won lol) and then today with my SG guys-Jake, Peter, and Adil!

Talk to you all next week!!

Millennial Week/ USHLI!!

(My ECC Experience, Phi Theta Kappa, Student Life) Permanent link

Hey all!!

I hope you all had a great weekend!! :)

This is going to be a busy week for me and the Phi Theta Kappa crew!

We have our Millennial Week starting tomorrow!

Monday and Tuesday we will be having a Voter's registration drive and a game show just to see how much you know about politics!

On Wednesday we will be having a mock debate in the Jobe Lounge with students representing each of the 4 primary parties and right after there will be a mock election to see which candidate won!

On Thursday we will be revealing the winner of the debate and continuing with our Voter's registration drive and a game show.

To end Millennial Week, we will also be having a Karaoke Night just to have some fun and relax after a busy week!

Unfortunately, I will not be able to make it to Karaoke Night since I will be at the USHLI (United States Hispanic Leadership Institute) Conference as one of their annual scholarship recipients. I'm so excited to be able to network with some of the brightest students from around the country! My favorite part of this is being able to spend 4 days in Chicago! This is like my dream come true-no joke :)

Well on Sunday, I will be able to let you all know how the conference went and I can't wait to share everything I learned!

Pinching Pennies!

(My ECC Experience) Permanent link

As a college student, we all know expensive getting an education might be! From paying tuition, keeping up with our social life, etc, our money somehow manages to disappear within seconds. I have provided for you some tips that have been very helpful with me!

1. Save on Textbooks
This semester, I bought all of my books online and that helped me a lot. I saved $400 by buying them used, sooner, and online. I even bought a new book worth $150 for $60 when the used books were more expensive than the new ones! YIKES! Also, check for websites that offer free shipping or discounts.

2. Seek Alternative Transportation

Since I don't drive very often, it can be a hassle getting to school. Fortunately, I have great friends who offer to give me a ride for school. Even though they never take my money, I still repay them by buying them lunch or something. It shows how appreciative you are of that! In the long run, it saves both of you money :)

3. Get Organized

I have noticed that being organized in general can be a saver, especially a money saver. If you don't know where your things are, most likely you will go out and buy the same thing over and over again. Even if it's just having a small file, boxes, or whatever suits your needs, knowing where your belongings are is crucial to saving money.

4. Be Creative With Your Leisure Time

Keeping up with your social life is great, but there's no need to spend so much money on that. With my friends a simple movie night with movies from Redbox does the job! Check to see where free events will be happening on campus or in your city.

5. Look For Scholarships

Scholarships are very GREAT! I mean, who doesn't love free money? Check on different financial aid websites to see what scholarships are available. Also, be aware of the deadlines and requirements when checking them out. The only scholarships you don't get are those you don't apply for!

I hope this helps! Talk to you all next week!

Old School Disney

 Permanent link

My sister and I have recently bonded over some of the shows we grew up watching. Then all these memories of coming home after school and turning on the TV emerged! O how I miss being a kid, but then again all I need to do is go on YouTube and these shows are available for me to enjoy! However, it’s not the same. My sister and I made a list of shows that we would like just a one day marathon of, even if it’s just a few episodes!

1. Lizzie McGuire

2. Even Stevens

3. That's So Raven

4. Kim Possible

5. The Proud Family

How great would it be to watch these shows and many more just at least for a day! Sigh!

What Disney show would you like to have a marathon of?

-My sister just offered to give me a liquid pencil only if I gave her shout out! Shout out to Ana!
